1. Định nghĩa
Mạo từ là những từ để xác định một danh từ cụ thể hoặc không cụ thể.
Ví dụ:
– I would like an apple (tôi muốn trái táo,trái nào cũng được)
– The dog is on the chair (con chó ở trên ghế – đã xác định là con chó nào)
2. Mạo từ không xác định “a” “an”
– Chỉ ra rằng một danh từ đề cập đến một ý tưởng chung hơn là một điều cụ thể
Ví dụ” “ A ball is round”. (chỉ rất chung)
+ “An” đi với các danh từ bắt đầu các nguyên âm “ A, E, I, O, U”
+ “A” đi với các danh từ bắt đầu các phụ âm
3. Mạo từ xác định “the”
Giới hạn ý nghĩa của một danh từ đối với một thứ cụ thể.
Ví dụ “ Do you see the cat next to the chair”
Mạo từ “the” cho bạn biết rằng bạn đang nói đến một con mèo cụ thể mà cả người nghe và người nói đều biết

Cách dùng mạo từ “the”.
– Dùng “the” trước một danh từ đã được xác định cụ thể
– Dùng “the” với danh từ ko đếm được khi nói đến vật cụ thể
Ví dụ:
+ Sugar is sweet (nói chung)
+ The sugar on the table is from Cuba.
– Dùng “the” với những tính từ so sánh nhất hoặc only
Ví dụ: The first, the most beautiful, the only girl,….
– Dùng “the” cho những khoảng thời gian xác định
Ví dụ: in the 1990s
– Dùng “the” trước một danh từ số ít để chỉ một nhóm, một hạng người nhất định trong xã hội
Ví dụ: The small shopkeeper , the top official
– Dùng “the + adj” cho một nhóm người
Ví dụ:
+ The old (the old people)
+ The rich (the rich people)
– Dùng “the + họ” một gia đình = số nhiều
Ví dụ:The Smiths = Mr. Smith, Mrs. Smith and their children
4. Không dùng mạo từ “the”
Ta không dùng mạo từ trước
– Các bữa ăn
– Tên một hồ, ngọn núi, hành tinh, chòm sao, tên riêng của trường. trước tên các nước chỉ có một từ
– Bất kì môn thể thao
– Danh từ trừu tượng (happiness, freedom)
– Các ngày lễ
– Các loại nhạc cụ
