Giới từ trong bài thi TOEIC

Trong kỳ thi TOEIC, giới từ (prepositions) được sử dụng rất phổ biến. Giới từ được sử dụng để chỉ sự vị trí và mối quan hệ giữa các đối tượng trong câu.

1. Giới từ là gì?

Giới từ là những từ chỉ thời gian, vị trí… chỉ sự liên quan giữa các từ khác trong cụm, trong câu văn. Chúng được sử dụng trong câu với vai trò gắn kết các từ, cụm từ để giúp bạn hiểu rõ hơn câu văn, ngữ cảnh.

2. Vị trí của giới từ

• Trước danh từ  → Ex: at the supermarket,..
• Sau danh từ  → Ex: effect on,…
• Sau tính từ → Ex: afraid of,…
• Sau động từ → Ex: think of,..

3. Các loại giới từ

a. Giới từ chỉ thời gian

• in (trong)
• on (vào lúc)
• at (lúc, ngay thời điểm)
• for (trong vòng)
• within (trong vòng)
• about (khoảng)
• during (trong suốt) 
• since (kể từ khi),
• until/ till (cho tới khi)
• before (trước khi)
• after (sau khi)

b. Giới từ chỉ nơi chốn

• in (trong)
• on (ở trên)
• at (tại)
• above (cao hơn, trên)
• below (thấp hơn, dưới
• over (trên)
• under (dưới, ngay dưới)
• inside – outside (bên trong – bên ngoài)
• in front of (phía trước)
• behind (phía sau)
• near (gần – khoảng cách ngắn)
• by, beside, next to (bên cạnh)
• in the middle of (ở chính giữa)
• between (ở giữa 2 người/ vật)
• among (ở giữa một đám đông hoặc nhóm người/ vật)
• along (dọc theo)
• toward (về phía)

c. Giới từ chỉ mục đích

• For, to, in order to, so as to  (Để)

Ex: I go out to relax

d. Giới từ chỉ sở hữu

• with (với, bằng, có), without (không có), of (của)

4. Các cụm giới từ thường gặp trong TOEIC

a. In

• In an attempt/ effort to: nỗ lực làm gì đó. → In an attempt to finish his homework.

• In accordance with: tương ứng với/ đúng với → In accordance with this problem, we can negotiate friendly.

• In honor of: tôn vinh ai → We celebrate Mother’s Day in honor of our mothers.

• In advance: trước → If you’re going to leave, please tell me in advance.

• In case of: khi hoặc nếu xảy ra chuyện/ sự việc gì → In case of breakdown, please press the alarm button and call this number..

• In addition to: bên cạnh → In addition to Sam.

• In relation/ reference to: về việc → In relation to her,

• In compliance with: tuân theo → In compliance with his boss, he can do everything.

• In terms of: xét về mặt → In terms of success, we exceeded our wildest dreams.

• In the heart of: ở trung tâm → The building located in the heart of the city.

• In charge of: chịu trách nhiệm → The teacher put me in charge of organizing the project.

• In contrast to: tương phản với → In contrast to the previous studies,

• In favor of: nghiêng về → I am not in favor of expanding the parking lot.

• In keeping with: Hòa hợp/ phù hợp với → In keeping with new fashion trends.

b. At

• At the age of: ở độ tuổi → I learned to drive at the age of 21.

• At the beginning of: lúc đầu → At the beginning of the game, I know my failure.

• At all costs: bất cứ giá nào → I had a dream at all costs.

• At one’s desk: chỗ làm việc → He asked me at his desk.

• At the end: cuối → At the end of the film, she still doesn’t have his love.

• At fault: có lỗi → He was even at fault for my accident.

• At first: lúc đầu → At first, I was happy here but now I’m not.

• At first sight: cái nhìn đầu → At first sight, we didn’t like each other.

• At a glance: ngay từ đầu → At a glance I knew I didn’t like him.

• At last: cuối cùng → At last, our stories had a happy ending.

• At the latest: thời điểm muộn nhất → Cinderella had to be home by 12 at the latest.

• At least: ít nhất → He is cold but at least he still sits down beside me.

c. By

• By accident ~ by chance: vô tình → I was so sleepy that I confessed with him by accident.

• By all accounts: theo những gì được biết → By all accounts, he fell in love with someone I don’t know.

• By appointment: việc xảy ra vào dịp đặc biệt → The party can be opened by appointment.

• By the arm/ hand: cầm tay → He took me by the hand as we walked along the street.

• By bus/ train/ airplane, etc: bằng phương tiện gì → Are you going to go there by bus or by train?

• By far: đến thời điểm này → ‘Before Sunset’ is by far my favorite film.

• By heart: thuộc lòng → We had to remember it by heart.

• By land/ sea/ air: bằng đường bộ/ biển/ trên không → I get sick whenever I travel by sea.

• By luck: gặp may → They can’t keep in touch but meet together by luck.

• By means of: bởi → I was able to afford the car by means of a bank loan.

• By mistake: không may → I chose the wrong road by mistake. Now we’re lost.
